In Chang's own words, 'I never think of my paintings primarily as depictions of scenery. Although they portray majestic mountain panoramas and bucolic river scenes, I view the individual landscape elements - rocks, trees, clouds, waterfalls, thatched huts - mainly as formal components that need to be combined in a visually meaningful way, in accordance with time-honoured principles of brushwork and compositional structure.'
