The exhibition catalogue for calligrapher and abstract painter Gu Gan. Gu Gan takes inspiration from Western art, poetry and philosophy, and calligraphy’s role in traditional Chinese culture. With his brush, characters become a form of visual communication; linguistic barriers fall away as word and image are united. Gu Gan’s works thus acknowledge past and present, refashioned by his own creative vision and experience. A number of paintings presented in this catalogue are painted on handmade bamboo paper - rough and varied in texture - which provide an ideal medium to combine the artist's talent as both a calligrapher and an abstract painter. A biography of the artist is included in this catalogue.
