'Amrita won a gold medal at the Grand Salon for her painting Young Girls in 1982, when she was 20 years old. This led to her being elected as an Associate of the Societe Nationale. Seen here is Amrita with her two models, Indira and Denise Prouteaux, seated in front of the prize-winning painting, in the flat at Rue de Bassano. Denise, a journalist who also wrote on art, was a close friend of the sisters. There are two other paintings of Denise by Amrita; a portrait bearing her name is in the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi. When I met her in 1986 Denise told me that the Germans when they entered Paris during the Occupation, took away a large painting by Amrita of Denise seated on a chair. On the extreme right of the montage is a Self-Portrait by Amrita done around 1930. On the extreme left you see Amrita in Shimla, circa 1937.'
