Redon Window

Photograph of Roberto Chabet's Redon Window, oil on canvas painting created in 1963.

The work is part of a series of paintings and drawings that Chabet made in the 1960s that used the window as subject, as compositional device, and as metaphor.

Redon Window is inspired by a lithograph of the French Symbolist Odilon Redon (1849-1916), titled Day, from the series Dreams (1891). Chabet saw this print in one of the first art books he owned. It depicts the interior of a dark and empty room, lit by a casement window, and beyond it, at the centre, a tree trunk thrusts upwards.

The work is included in Windows to Conversations, a group exhibition by Roberto Chabet, Lee Aguinaldo, and Fernando Zobel at Ateneo Art Gallery from October 6, 2011 - January 28, 2012. The exhibition is part of Chabet: 50 Years, a year-long series of exhibitions organised by King Kong Art Projects Unlimited in various venues in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Manila from 2011 - 2012.
