Qin Fengling and Wang Yehan recently had their first joint exhibition at Hong Kong's Opera Gallery. Qin was a housewife when the two were married in 1983, but she began painting in 1985. Wang Yehan, who graduated from the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts in 1980, acts as her mentor. Of his art he states: "I hardly refer to my works as abstract paintings because I always believe that paintings are all abstract by nature... Following Formalism is like walking down a dead-end road." Qin's works are colourful and light-hearted in tone, but her subjects — the environment, urban overcrowding, and the evolution of Beijing — are serious.
