Born in Shanghai and moved to San Francisco in 1982, Chinese artist Li Huayi received training in the Chinese ink painting tradition as well as in modern and contemporary Western art. This broad-based training, together with the artist's keen observation of his surrounding landscape, lead to the development of a manner of painting which bridges the cultural gap between 'traditional Chinese' and 'modern Western'. More in-depth study of the art of Li Huayi is provided in the two essays featured in this issue of Kaikodo.
