Comic book published to accompany The Empire of Women: Not a Fairytale as part of the exhibition Musuo Firplace Goddess by Berlin artist Mathilde ter Heijne. Mosuo of Yunnan, is one of the 55 ethnic minorities in China. However, the Mosuo way of life and its matriarchal social structures are slowly eroded due to the encroachment of the Han majority. The present exhibition by Mathilde ter Heijne focuses on the Mosuo's social structure and the accompanying comic book recounts the artist's trip to Lake Lugu - the home of the Mosuo. These comic books are distributed for free, not only to children in the village of Lijiazui village, the schools in the region, but also to those interested in the Mosuo people, matriarchal social structures, and alternatives to patriarchy.
