Research Project: Unveiling Contemporary Art in Central Asia

Leeza Ahmady’s research project looks at contemporary visual culture in Central Asia: Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Kazakhstan in Central Asia. Her project surveys practice in new media, video, and performance art (proposing an alternative entry to the region from the geo-political paradigm of the time) and offers a broad spectrum of analysis related to the arts and culture of Central Asia, alongside an overview of historical and recent developments in contemporary art.

Ahmady’s research culminated in a series of interviews with artists and curators, materials on the art scenes of Central Asia, and a mapping of practices, artists, and art spaces in the region. All are available from AAA. 

About Leeza Ahmady

Afghanistan-born New York-based artist, curator, and educator Leeza Ahmady is a founding member of two non-profit organisations: NURTURArt Non Profit, and School of Hope. She is also an advisory member of the Center for Contemporary Arts in Afghanistan (CCAA).
