On Thursday, 29 June 2006, the last talk of ArtTalk Series has been given by Lena Cobangbang, entitled 'Contemporary Philippine Art Now 1996 to 2006: From artist-run spaces to art galleries' .
In this talk Cobangbang traced the development of the contemporary art scene and the independent contemporary curatorial practice in the Philippines. She also drew from her experiences to discuss the roles of curators, collectors, galleries, museums, and how they invariably affect the market in the Philippines.
Lena Cobangbang is a practicing artist, arts organiser, researcher and curator. Over the years she has been cofounder and artist of different artist-run spaces in the Philippines including the Surrounded By Water, Big Sky Mind Artists Projects Foundation Inc and the Future Prospects Art Space. Cobangbang has been involved in the recent revival of the Philippine art scene by a new generation of young artists who have been influenced by both international trends and the conceptual influences of earlier Philippine artists.
This was the last in a series of six talks organised by the International Association of Art Critics Hong Kong (AICA/HK), supported by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. The ArtTalk Series aims to encourage intelligent topical debate about current art and cultural issues of interest to both specialist art and cultural workers and to the general public.
