This photograph captures artist Valsan Koorma Kolleri in his studio at the Kasauli Art Centre Artist Workshop.
The Artist Workshop was held for three weeks between May and June in 1979. Participating artists included John Davies, Dhruva Mistry, Nilima Sheikh, Nagji Patel, Valsan Koorma Kolleri, Gulammohammed Sheikh, K.G. Subramanyan, and art critic Pranabranjan Ray.
That same year, Kasauli Art Centre organised its first inter-disciplinary seminar titled 'Marxism and Aesthetics' in collaboration with 'Social Scientist' journal. Participants included G.P. Deshpande, Sudhi Pradhan, P. Govind Pillai, Saeed Mirza, Sadanand Menon, Chandralekha, Geeta Kapur, Vivan Sundaram, Romi Khosla, Kalpana Sahani, Rajendra Prasad, Madhu Prasad, Hiren Gohain, Mihir and Malini Bhattacharya, and Sandeep Pendse. Proceedings of the seminar were published in 'Social Scientist' special number 89-90, Dec 1979 - Jan 1980.
Kasauli Art Centre was founded in 1976 by artist Vivan Sundaram in Kasauli, a hill station in North India. The Centre is known to have organised artists camps, international artist residency programmes, seminars and theatre workshops, all designed to explore common grounds between artists, filmmakers,critics, architects, playwrights and performers.
