This publication accompanies 'A Century in Crisis: Modernity and Tradition in the Art of Twentieth-Century China', which is the modern section of the exhibition 'China: 5,000 Years' held at the Guggenheim Museum SoHo and Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in 1998. 'China: 5,000 Years' is the first exhibition by a major Western museum to juxtapose the art of modern China with its traditional counterpart. Its modern part, 'A Century in Crisis', is the first exhibition held outside China to tell a comprehensive story of China's modern art. Organized in four parts, the exhibition recounts the challenges, struggles, and successes of Chinese artists of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries as they have faced the radically changing cultural, social, economic, and political landscapes of the past century and a half. Selected bibliography is provided.
