This publication traces the figure of the artist through short stories written in multiple authorial, linguistic, temporal, and spatial frames. Here, the 'modern artist' may be seen as historically produced, encapsulating myriad ideas, forms of speech, practices, and debates particular to different regional contexts during the twentieth century. The stories in this collection reveal some of the ways this figure is constructed, offering diverse perspectives and new speculations by continually reproducing the artist as character. Stories from six of the seven languages represented in this dossier have been translated into English.
