Scheduled to be held from 12 to 22 June 1986 at the Fudan University Student Club, 'Creating Action Art Exhibition' was banned by the student club on 14 June but was later approved to re-open until 17 June. 'Creating Action Art Exhibition', while in the format of an exhibition, can be characterised as a happening. The exhibition showcased a range of paintings as well as ready-made objects (all of Tang Guanming's works were ready made objects) that included detritus, items found onsite and objects made by the artist prior to the exhibition.
Before the exhibition, the group of student artists had engaged in similar exhibitions in the classrooms of the Shanghai University Middle School but was stopped by the school authority in 1984.
