In this interview Tam recalls how he met Hong Kong artist, Lui Shou-kwan through his seminar at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in the mid-1960s (01:00-03:50). He explains his admiration for Lui’s educational philosophy, which focuses on stimulating students’ creativity rather than mere imitation (05:04-13:53). Tam then discusses Lui’s success as a teacher, describing how he encouraged students to try various mediums and techniques, both Chinese and Western, as a way to express their creativity (15:13-18:10). He also remarks upon Lui’s contribution to Chinese art, which lies in his endeavour to popularize and harmonize ancient Chinese art philosophy with the Western idea of individualism in Hong Kong (17:21-20:59). Tam narrates how he founded an art society with fellow students of Lui, which organized a series of art promoting activities and exhibitions from 1968 to 1971 (21:21-26:12). He also reminisces how he, as an art teacher at Wah Yan College, conveniently turned the college into the “headquarters” of the art society (33:17-37:33).
Tam emphasizes that after becoming the director of the Hong Kong Museum of Art, he is dedicated to the promotion of a wide range of artistic movements and styles, without favouring that the New Ink Movement of Lui (27:10-30:39). The interview ends with Tam summarizing his work at the museum, which include historical research and the establishment of new art facilities for both the public and artists (39:00-42:00).
