The ‘Coomaraswamy Centenary Seminar’ was organised by the Lalit Kala Akademi in order to celebrate the birth centenary of philosopher and art historian Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy. Gulammohammed Sheikh was invited to be the convener of the seminar. The seminar was held 19-20 December 1977, at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, and was supported by the Department of Culture of the Government of India. The seminar was attended by renowned scholars and artists and academicians including, Niharranjan Ray, Mulk Raj Anand, B. N. Goswamy, C. Shivaramamurthy, Karl Khandalawala, K. G. Subramanyan and Kapila Vatsayan. Eminent scholars from overseas, like Subhadradis Diskul from Thailand, Leelananda Prematilake from Sri Lanka and Roger Lipsey from Princeton were also part of this seminar.
On the occasion of the Coomaraswamy Centenary Seminar, an exhibition of photo-documents on Coomaraswamy was also held at Rabindra Bhavan between 17 and 27 December. Subsequently, this exhibition travelled to Punjab University where it was open to the public at the Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh, between 18 January and 6 February 1978. The film on Coomaraswamy titled Dance of Shiva was screened. A Working Bibliography of Ananda K. Coomaraswamy, compiled by Rama Coomaraswamy was released on this occasion.
