Kwok in Beijing

Frog King fastening a string of plastic bags to a tree at the Summer Palace (頤和園). The happening is part of the Kwok in Beijing project that took place during the artist's visit to Beijing, April 1979. It was among the earliest documented performance art in China in the late 70s.

Kwok in Beijing, together with Kwok in Shanghai, are sometimes referred as 'Plastic Bag Happenings in China'. The specific medium of plastic bag is a seminal element in Frog King's artistic practice. The material, versatile, light, and abundant in its amount, has inspired experimentations of its three-dimensionality. It is subsequently utilised as an alternative form of sculpture in the artist's performance/happening.
