Painting #2

Photograph of Noli Gamboa's Painting #2 in 'Untitled Painting # 1 and Other Paintings,' a group exhibition by students from the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts (UP CFA), curated by Roberto Chabet at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) in 1974. The photograph is numbered.

The work has 'taken as a whole the black and white lines make for a labyrinthine design; otherwise they make for illusions of solid shapes and forms as they repeat each other.'

Chabet wrote, 'This exhibition is about painting. It is about color and how color works in painting. It is about shape and how shape works in painting. Being about painting, it is necessarily about the flatness of painting and the illusions of space permitted on this flatness.

Being about painting, the concern here is not for 'subject matter,' unless the properties of painting - color, shape, flatness - are taken for 'subject matter'.

The concern here is for painting paintings. This is an activity that includes the thinking about the painting to be done, the methods chosen to do the painting, and the actual work with the tools and materials of painting. Being about the activity of painting, the exhibition is about the actualities of painting: ideas, method, matter. These actualities make the object which is the painting.

The exhibition is meant to be looked at and seen. What is looked at and seen is meant to occur. The occurrence is of object and experience.'
