Entitled 'Universalis', the 23rd Sao Paulo Biennial split the world up into seven regions and entrusted to expert curators the task of selecting about six representatives from each region. The objective was to overcome the inertia of earlier attempts in which the Bienal was a mere host of national representations, thus, producing an exhibition which would reflect and innovate the very practice of displaying art.

The catalogue includes artist biographies and texts by curators from the various regions.
