A short, comprehensive guide to accompany the project entitled 'A Short History of Performance Part II: The Lecture as a Work of Art' held at Whitechapel Gallery, London, from 18 to 23 November 2003. Curated by Andrea Tarsia and Iwona Blazwick, and organised by Chris Hammonds, the project takes the pedagogical framework of the lecture as its starting point. It is the second of an ongoing series which explores the impact and legacy of performance art from the 1960s to 2003. The first, held in April 2002, was something of an experiment, in which artists were invited to re-create for the first time works originally performed in the 1960s and 70s. Artists include The Atlas Group/ Walid Raad, Joseph Beuys, Mark Dion, Andrea Fraser, Inventory, Robert Morris, Martha Rosler, and Carey Young. The publication features texts that introduce the context of the performance pieces as showcased at the project.
