Tong Yanrunan was born in 1977 in Jiujiang, China and lives and works in Hangzhou. His work is a sustained investigation into the nature of perception and the construction of identity. In a large body of work titled Manjuelong Comrades, Tong has documented many of the inhabitants of the small farming village of Manjuelong near Hangzhou, Tong's interpretation of likeness to true nature, rather than superficial appearance, gives each of these works its own very special quality. The present catalogue provides Tong's biography, together with essays by Jonathan Thomson and Zhang Renyuan on the physiology of perception and the philosophical basis of Tong's art.
