This book consists of a biography of John Turnbull Thomson and a number of plates of paintings that he drew on Singapore under British colonial rule. Thomson, as an early surveyor in Singapore, was appointed Government Surveyor for the Traits Settlements. Apart from constructing a number of roads, bridges and buildings, he wrote a number of books and articles on the region and, as a self-trained artist, painted a number of pictures which are now an important record of the early days in Singapore.
