The catalogue was published in conjunction with the touring exhibition 'Awakenings: Art in Society in Asia 1960s–1990s.' According to its preface, the curatorial collaboration between four art institutions from Japan, Korea and Singapore looks to the issues of 'decolonising, democratising and decentring art histories, exhibitions and museums...redress[ing] colonial legacies, mindsets and structures of power that manifest in institutional, systemic and discursive forms.' Furthermore, 'the curatorial intent for the exhibition was to excavate and link shared "contact points" across Asia that demonstrate either actual cultural interactions (connections) or other forms of visual or conceptual similarities through the lens of art history (resonances).'
