Originally trained in traditional Chinese ink painting, the works in the present monograph, featuring mainly the ‘Red Lama’ series, show a departure from the traditional medium. The artist explains his new method as follows: ‘I wish to paint my Chinese ink painting with sophisticated Chinese spiritual connotations but with different approaches from tradition. In order to expand the expressive space of my paintings, I use every means possible. I paint on cotton with acrylic and mineral pigment, prepare textures with alum and lithopone and glue gold foils and rice paper on my paintings. I try to construct my new style of Chinese painting into a national art with contemporary signficance.’ A biography of the artist and a list of his publications are also included in this monograph.
