Catalogue of solo exhibition by Chiharu Shiota at Kanagawa Prefectural Gallery in 2008. By likening her own body to the canvas and infiltrating into the work, Shiota's performances bring the artist's own physicality and femininity into relief. Her installations composed of 'window' capture the history of Berlin, the feelings of the people living there, and the breathing of their everyday life. In other installations, the artist identifies human psychology in 'thread' used to make clothes and expresses the feelings of anxiety and tension by stretching countless threads all over the exhibition space. There are also installations in which pianos and chairs are burnt to present an assemblage of objects void of function representing the relationship between one's self and the outside world, loneliness, and frustration. Her works are characterized by the use of multifarious materials and the way she produces a unique space taking advantage of wherever it is that the exhibition is being held. Artist biography is provided in the present catalogue.
