This publication accompanies the exhibition entitled 'Gendai: Japanese Contemporary Art - Between the Body and Space' held from October to December 2000 at Centre for Contemporary Art, Ujazdowski Castle. The title of the exhibition 'Gendai' means 'contemporary' in Japanese, whereas the subtitle 'Japanese Contemporary Art - Between the Body and Space' suggests the key themes of this exhibition - the body and space. Examining today's Japanese art in terms of these two major factors, the exhibition features work of fourteen Japanese artists who are born from the 1940s to 1970s.
