‘I do not want my paintings to follow the norm. I want to push the spirit of the ink-and-brush tradition towards modernism, and offer new potential to the realm of traditional Chinese art’. – Qiu Deshu. The works presented in this exhibition catalogue document the development of Qiu Deshu’s singular technique, ‘fissuring’, which involves creating images on a surface of torn and rubbed layers of Chinese rice paper on canvas. Inspired by Buddhist images and philosophy as well as celestial symbols used in traditional Chinese astronomy, Qiu demonstrates through this series of works how his ‘fissuring’ technique conveys the feelings of solemnity and tranquility so cherished by the artist himself. A biography of the artist is included.
