This publication documents an alternative history of independent art spaces in Tainan, Taiwan from the 1980s to the 2010s.
Taking a chronological approach, it firsts introduces the earliest spaces established in Tainan in the 1980s and '90s, as a response to a lack of acceptance and exhibiting space of newer art forms such as conceptual and performance art within the museum and gallery system at that time.
Switching to the 2000s, the publication then focuses on some independent spaces that resided upon renovated old houses within Tainan city, an action that attempted to pull together art and the public, as well as to enliven the rich histories of the city by these spaces.
The last section looks at the new spaces established after 2010, those set up by young recent graduates of art universities in Taiwan. Deploying different curatorial strategies and collaborations, these spaces together are gaining a new momentum for Tainan art ecology in formation.
