Called 'the preeminent American Sculptor' by critic Robert Hughes, Isamu Noguchi is renowned for his freestanding sculptures and public gardens in cities around the world, including Tokyo, Paris, New York, Chicago, Mexico City, and Jerusalem. He is also acclaimed for his transformations of traditional Japanese paper and wire lanterns, called Akari, into delicate, luminous works of art.
This monograph is a record of the exhibition 'Isamu Noguchi: The Space of AKARI and Stone', held in 1985 in the Seibu Museum of Art in Tokyo. A chronology of the artist together with essays on his work are included.
