In addition to being a poet, scholar and dramatist, Dr. Joseph Yen is also an accomplished painter in his own right. He became interested in painting when he first saw the aboriginal stone carvings in Taitung and he could not stop painting since then. With a solid foundation in both Chinese and Western literature, Dr. Yen seeks to synthesize both cultures in his paintings. As said by Hsien-Sheng Wu in his essay, Dr. Yen's paintings consist of the elements of confinement in Chinese poetry, and that of romantic openness in Western culture.

The catalogue includes artist biography and preface by the artist.
