This catalogue was published to accompany the solo exhibition of John Way at the Shanghai Art Museum in 2001. Born in Shanghai, Way moved to Hong Kong after 1949, and later emigrated to the United States in 1956. In his exposure to Western art after 1949, Way began to pursue a synthesis of Eastern and Western techniques and skills in his artistic career. He mixes the spontaneous Chinese calligraphic brushwork with Impressionist colours. The works in this catalogue are presented in chronological order, thus allowing us to trace the development of John Way from 1950 to 2001. A biography of the artist is included. With prefaces by Lee Xiangyoung (Executive Director of Shanghai Art Museum) and C.C. Wang (Artist, Connoisseur and Authenticator of Classical Chinese Paintings) and a foreword by Alice King (Director of Alisan Fine Arts).
