It includes passages from the author's earlier publications Bazaar Paintings of Calcutta (1953) and Kalighat Drawings (1962). Introduction by the author, illustrations, an annotated bibliography, a list of public collections, a short guide to iconography (in the form of a glossary of principal proper names) as well as a detailed catalogue of Victoria and Albert Museum's collection of Kalighat paintings.
