This volume accompanies the exhibition 'Kazuo Shiraga: Six Decades', presented at McCaffrey Fine Art, New York, from October 2009 to January 2010. A prominent member of the Gutai group founded by Jiro Yoshihara in 1954, Kazuo Shiraga is known for his "foot paintings" and other performative works. In her essay, Reiko Tomii offers a historical and critical assessment of Shiraga's career while Fergus McCaffrey, an art dealer, considers the "transmission failures" that affected the reception of his art in the United States. This monograph includes some of the artist's writings and interviews, a chronology and list of works in public collections.
