Catalogue of joint exhibition by seven Lhasa artists at Red Gate Gallery, Beijing in 2007. According to curator Leigh Sangster, the art world of Lhasa finds advantage in their peripheral position where they are not subject to the vacillating trends of art centres such as New York, London or Beijing. This gives Lhasa artists freedom to develop in their own ways. On the other hand their position in Lhasa limits their engagement with other artists internationally and access to galleries that might show their work. There are no art critics in Lhasa, no museums of contemporary Tibetan Art, and no galleries with rotating exhibitions of domestic or international artists. Yet, there are several artists associations which have formed in recent years for gathering and discussion, showing their works, raising visibility of their art and exchanging stimulating ideas. The present exhibition is the first exhibition of contemporary Tibetan art in a commercial gallery in Beijing. Artist biographies are provided in the catalogue.
