'Like his predescessors, Li Keran sought his inspiration from nature... His greatest achievement lied in his investigation in the manipulation of light in his painting. In traditional Chinese painting, the manipulation of the concepts of yin (shade) and yang (sun), xu (void), shi (substance) can obtusely infer to light and shade through the organization of positive and negative space. However, light as a physical element is previously alien to the Chinese pictorial tradition.
