Although Miwa Yanagi has risen to international prominence since 1990, this exhibition at Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art marks the first in-depth examination of the artist's works by a Japanese art museum. Featured in the exhibition are the photo series 'My Grandmothers', and a long-awaited new series Yanagi has created for this exhibition, 'Fairy Tale'. In 'My Grandmothers', Yanagi asked young models to imagine themselves, as they will be, fifty years from now. 'Fairy Tale' was inspired by story scenes in which a girl appears with an old woman in a secret chamber, where they transform back and forth between old age and youth. Yanagi's works examine womanhood on the axis of time from girlhood to old age, overlap and interplay with their perceptions of their own lives.
The catalogue includes a Q&A between the artist and six grandmothers, and artist biography.
