This monograph is published to coincide with the exhibition 'Ni Haifeng: Multiple Lies' at the GEM, museum of contemporary art, The Hague, 22 March to 22 June 2003.

Exhibition curator Roel Arkesteijn writes an essay the 'disengaged' world of Ni Haifeng, saying that Ni's crystal-clear, large-scale colour and black-and-white photographs are intriguing because of the sense of alienation they convey: 'it is like looking at the everyday environment with new eyes'. Illustrations of works exhibited are followed by the article. An interview with the artist by art critic and curator Marianne Brouwer is also included. Questions such as the uniqueness of Ni's Chinese identity, the difference between working in China and the West as a Chinese artist, as well as how cultural tradition has influenced Ni's artistic self-expression are raised.
