Catalogue of solo exhibition by Qiu Zhijie at the Singapore Tyler Print Institute (STPI) in 2008. 'Qiu Zhijie: The Bridge‧Nanjing‧Under the Heaven features the artist's recent works of lithographs, etchings and woodblock prints, in which Qiu explores the notion of nationhood - both geopolitical and psychological as it relates to the city of Nanjing. Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge was completed in 1968, an engineering triumph for New China. It is the first double-decked dual purpose railway-motorway bridge designed and built under New China's government; for decades the Bridge was celebrated as a major symbol of Communist achievement, occupying a unique position in national visual imagery, second perhaps only to Tiananmen Square. The strong symbolic power of the Bridge has also produced an unexpected side-effect: it has been a prime spot for suicides, averaging over 300 attempts each year. Qiu Zhijie is intrigued by connections between the national political implications of the Bridge and individual fate. Here, the extremes of historical authority and vision of the future cast their shadows over the choice of physical lives. The exhibition showcases over 40 new unique and editioned work that Qiu Zhijie has created for the Singapore Tyler Print Institute. Artist biography is provided in this catalogue.
