With globalization as the backdrop, the 2002 Shanghai Bienniale focuses on problems of city culture, architecture and issues of urbanization. It is also an attempt to integrate visual art and architecture by showcasing paintings, models, sculptures, photographs, texts, sketches, video and interactive media that examine urban condition in a global context.
