This volume is a companion to the exhibition catalogue, Still Life: Art, Ecology & the Politics of Change, Sharjah Biennial 8. Organised by Artistic Director Jack Persekian and a team of curators including Mohammad Kazem, Eva Scharrer, and Jonathan Watkins, the Biennial addresses ecological challenges facing the world today, such as global warming and climate change, as well as the social, economic and political aspects that are closely linked. Since it was published to coincide with the opening of the Biennial in April 2007, the first book could not provide complete accounts of all the projects actually presented. However, the essays printed here, accompanied by installation views and descriptions in the artists' section, are mostly written by individuals who attended and experienced the Biennial firsthand. This publication also includes transcripts of representative sessions of the symposium of lectures, panel discussions, and screenings that occurred over the course of three days during the Biennial's inaugural week.
