Born in 1930 in Nagoya, Japan, Shomei Tomatsu came of age during the devastation of World War II. He took up the camera in 1950 when he was a university student, and from then on, Tomatsu has been using his lens to capture the social changes of the Japanese society.

The present publication is the first comprehensive publication on the artist, written in English and offered essays which address his 50-year career. A selection of excerpts from Tomatsu's own writings are also included. A detailed chronology of the artist's activities, as well as a selected bibliography are provided.
