Interview with Chan Kaiyin by Leung Chiwo Warren

Artist Chan Kaiyin talks about his passion for drawing since childhood, and his experience in the design programme at the then Hong Kong Polytechnic (00:00–13:18). Chan also talks about the influence of Buddhism and family on his personal artistic creation (13:18–19:19), how to draw inspiration from the little details in life, traditional Buddhist artwork, and art books. He also elaborates on how to use inspiration from these sources to create artworks that are replete with references to religious philosophy (19:19–31:37). He discusses choosing readymades and making original objects on one’s own as two different modes of expression, and the challenges that these two modes entail. He illustrates the differences between the two with a couple of works which he finds satisfactory (31:37–48:00). In the last part of the interview, Chan comments that the Hong Kong art circle is fairly small and rather disconnected from the public. In his view, life can serve as a point of departure for artists, so that they can practice art and make constructive contributions to the community (1:00:15–1:12:19).

藝術家陳啟賢於訪問中談到自己自小喜愛繪畫，及後進入香港理工學院修讀設計課程的經歷 (00:00-13:18)。陳氏又記述佛學及家庭等對個人藝術創作的影響 (13:18-19:19)，說明如何從生活細節、傳統佛教藝術品和藝術書籍中取得靈感，並思考如何藉此創作出富宗教哲理的作品 (19:19-31:37)。他亦談及挑選現成材料和親手製作物料兩者的表達方式與困難，和幾個自己滿意的作品 (31:37-48:00)。陳氏也提到一些自己喜歡的藝術家、音樂和創作目標 (48:00-1:00:10)。訪問末段，陳氏指出香港藝術圈子狹小，與群眾疏離，認為藝術家應從生活出發，多作有建設性的實踐 (1:00:15-1:12:19)。
