Interview with Pang Steven Kawing by Leung Chiwo Warren

In the second part of the interview, Pang discusses some considerations for the author-led craft process, and how a number of 20Beans + a Box works were treated (00:00–12:00). He explains the treatment of space for installation artwork, and special considerations that were given to some unique exhibition spaces, and the physical features of the materials (13:30–16:23). He also talks about a few artists and their works which he appreciates (17:00–19:50). Pang says that he was contemplating plans to leave Hong Kong to study abroad, and his interest in switching careers to education. Due to his passive personality since childhood, he often refrains from critiquing works. Therefore, he thinks that he is not cut out to become an artist. He also thinks that Hong Kong’s art scene is too small, and there is a chronic lack of space and audiences (19:50–31:05). Besides works that were created to respond to the handover in 1997, Hong Kong art, Pang argues, do not exhibit any special characteristics. However, not having clear definition of what constitute Hong Kong art could very well be one of its characteristics (35:18–38:48).

在訪問的第二節中,彭氏續談創作者主導工藝製作的考慮,又討論幾個「廿豆.盒子畫」作品的處理方法 (00:00-12:00);又閳釋裝置作品在空間中的處理,以及場地的特殊性與作品物理性的考量 (13:30-16:23)。他也談及幾位他欣賞的藝術家及作品 (17:00-19:50)。彭氏提到有意離港往外學習的打算;又自稱性格較被動,缺乏批判性的意見,不太適合當藝術家,但對教育有興趣。亦有感香港的藝術環境狹小,空間與觀眾均長期不足 (19:50-31:05);又認為除了為回應九七回歸而創作的作品,香港並沒有任何特色,但界線模糊也可以是其特色之一 (35:18-38:48)。
