Tao Ho has often been described as a Renaissance man – he is simultaneously an architect, an urban planner, a designer, a community leader and an artist. This publication is the exhibition catalogue for his series of ink paintings entitled ‘Impromptu in Black’. Pamela Kember writes in the accompanying essay, ‘The beauty of Ho’s works lies in their assimilation with traditional Chinese painting and landscapes but carries little on the surface to connect with the rigorous demands of such traditions. In wrenching loose from such carriers of conventions, symbolic frameworks and repetition of subject that form the basis of Chinese landscape art, Tao Ho framed new and striking images. Moreover, there is also a sense of stillness and a suspension of movement that occurs between the empty spaces on the paper in which the ink marks seem almost controlled, as if hovering, and then become fixed in an instance or a moment of time.’ A biography of Tao Ho is also included.
