This is a monograph of calligrapher and ink painter Wang Dongling. His experience travelling and lecturing in Europe, North America and Japan has broadened his artistic vision and influenced his artistic style.
Fan Jingzhong gives us a more concrete idea of the art of Wang. He writes in the preface (provided in English, Chinese as well as Japanese),'From Dongling's recent work we see that he sees use of space as his main task. His strong sense of character construction has all along contributed toward an ingenious artistic arrangement as is found, for instance, in his inspirational understanding of the meaning of the strokes which created for us an internal beauty rarely found in modern calligraphy. This is what Dongling has always attempted to master in relation to Western abstract painting and exactly what has always been overshadowed by popular fashion. It is also what I feel is worthy of "reading" in his work, a feeling that only comes through when read vis-a-vis traditional calligraphy and scholastic paintings of traditional/standard tastes. Through its reading I have found the quality of what we Chinese call "yun", or "artistic flavour", a quality which is obviously incarnated in his meaningful lines and full-feathered, vigorous strokes'.
A chronolgy of the artist is included.
