This book examines the complex interactions between the artists of China, Japan and the West. It is the author's aim 'to try to sum up the effects of East and West on each other's art, to give a brief account of how these effects came about, to compare the responses of China and of Japan to Western Art and to consider what "influence" means, how it operates and how it may sometimes fail to operate at times when it would seem that all the conditions for a fruitful interaction were present.' - extracted from the introduction.
