Catalogue published to accompany the exhibition of the same title at Museum Fridericianum,  Kassel and Auckland Art Gallery, Toi o Tamaki in 1999. '"TOI TOI TOI" is in part a proposition and in part a declaration. It serizes a moment in contemporary New Zealand art and weaves it through some key strands of its modern condition. That moment both confirms and resists the long shadow cast by Colin McCahon, as it opens up the too little known photograms of Len Lye and extends through the contemporary work of Ralph Hotere, Bill Culbert, Boyd Webb, Billy Apple, Jacqueline Fraser, L. Budd et al. and Rosalie Gascoigne.

'Among this group of senior New Zealand born artists are those, like Webb and Culbert, who continue to live and work in England and in France but whose practice remains as visible in New Zealand as it is internationally, and those like Gascoigne who is more visibly an Australian. "TOI TOI TOI" draws the generation together and aligns their work with that of the new one, with Yuk King Tan, Lisa Reihana, Peter Robinson, Mike Stevenson and Ronnie van Hout. What distinguishes these artists is the degree to which they are repidly gathering international exposures as they continue to make a distinctive mark in New Zealand. This exhibition is as much about where New Zealand art has come as where it is going.' (Excerpt from 'Foreword,' p.8)
