This catalogue accompanies the art exhibition of the same title organized by Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in 1981. The exhibition was one of the first attempts by public museums in Japan to cast an investigative eye on the often-overlooked period in Japanese art history, the period of political and social turmoil and upheaval in the aftermath of Japan's defeat in the World War II. The catalogue features plates of works, introduction by Yasuhiro Yurugi, curator at Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, the artists' biographies, and a list of works. It also includes a glossary of keywords, references, and a chronological chart spanning 1945 through 1963.
