Collection of Hein-kuhn Oh's photographs from 1993-1999. Three bodies of work are featured: Itaewon Story (1993), Gwangju Story (1995), and Ajumma, Portrait of Middle-aged Women in Korea (1997). Itaewon Story shows individuals from the artist's hometown, which is known for businesses catered to foreigners due to its proximity to the U.S. Army base. Gwangju Story is a series of black and white documentary style portraits taken during breaks in between the filming of A Petal, a movie based on the 1980 Gwangju Democratization Movement. The serious expressions of the professional actors and Gwangju citizens participating in the reenactment, as well as those of the policemen and soldiers sent to maintain order on set, give the impression that they are in the midst of a real protest. According to Jin-sang Yoo, fact and fiction merge in Oh's photographs as subjects transform themselves: 'the camera acts as a forceful reminder of the memories related to places and events; the camera rouses the affect'. For the series Ajumma, Oh focuses on an 'indistinct, floating class' of middle-aged women, using a strong flash to isolate them from the background and to accentuate the sense of anxiety about their identity.
