This catalogue was published on the occasion of 'Varvara Shavrova: Between the Borders', the United States debut of the Russian-born Beijing-based artist, on view from January to March 2009. Through drawings, photomontages, paintings and video works, she examines the lasting imprint that borders—physical, political, cultural, and historical—contribute to our notions of freedom and belonging. The Borders project was inspired by American military flight maps from the 1980s depicting the Sino-Russian border and her experience visiting that remote region. Biography included.
