Wang Dongling is an internationally known modernist calligrapher based in China. He develops a new form of composition that synthesizes traditional Chinese aesthetics with modernist art. Usually there are no decipherable Chinese characters in his works, which have become closer to abstract painting than to calligraphy. His recent practice of including local writings, such as 'Under the Lion Rock' also grants his work a nature of publicity.
